Seattle Police Officer Punches Teenage Girl

A Seattle police officer was caught on video punching a 17-year old girl during an attempt to cite a group of young women for jaywalking. KOMO-TV reports the officer asked the girls to step over to his patrol car. As one of them struggled with the officer, the 17-year old intervened and placed her hands on the officer's arm, "causing the officer to believe she was attempting to physically affect the first subject's escape," police told the TV station.

The officer punches the girl in the face at 0:12 in this video, shot by a bystander with a cell phone camera.

I cannot believe the disrespect these young ladies are showing the police officers. The girl deserved to get hit, she was assaulting the police officer.

I agree. I would never put my hands on a cop or confront him the way she/they did. Looks like she deserved it.

Wrong, he should be arrested for assault. If I did that I would be charged with a felony. if he cant handle a simple jay walking stop then he shouldn't be a cop. the fact that these girls might not be model citizens has no relevance to this issue. This Cop lost control and committed a felony assault on a woman. He is another in a line line of S.O.B. cops. His department will cover for him but we all know he was not justified. A police officer can only throw a punch like that (Open Strike) if he fears for his life. he has half a dozen or more people around that he has no concern for, yet he knocks this girls teeth out. He is absolutely a perfect example of a man that should start a new career cleaning pools.

Hey COP, You ARE a Complete SOB and a failure. you don't deserve to wear the Badge.....

I agree with the first 2 postings. The girls were resisting arrest and fighting a police officer. They should have both been punched along with the people around that kept yelling at the police officer and the jerk video taping. He was doing his job and they were disrespectful and breaking the law by not cooperating with the police. Everyone else should have shut up and minded thier own business. If these girls were boys then people wouldn't be in such an uproar. Just because they are girls doesn't mean that the law doesn't apply to them. The fact they are "not model citizens" has total relevance! They lost control and were not cooperating with the cops...that's relevant!

I'm with Joe on this one. The cop couldn't handle a jaywalking stop and overreacted. You can and should resist arrest for unlawful arrest attempts.

“An illegal arrest is an assault and battery. The person so attempted to be restrained of his liberty has the same right to use force in defending himself as he would in repelling any other assault and battery.” (State v. Robinson, 145 ME. 77, 72 ATL. 260).

“Each person has the right to resist an unlawful arrest. In such a case, the person attempting the arrest stands in the position of a wrongdoer and may be resisted by the use of force, as in self- defense.” (State v. Mobley, 240 N.C. 476, 83 S.E. 2d 100).

“One may come to the aid of another being unlawfully arrested, just as he may where one is being assaulted, molested, raped or kidnapped. Thus it is not an offense to liberate one from the unlawful custody of an officer, even though he may have submitted to such custody, without resistance.” (Adams v. State, 121 Ga. 16, 48 S.E. 910).

The officers actions were 100 percent correct.

He was trying to enforce the law against jaywalking. She was directed to stand by the police vehicle. She chose instead to flee.

In an attempt to restrain the teen, the teen turned both verbally and physically combative.

Another teen came and physically tried to intervene in an arrest to allow the primary suspect to flee. As a result of her hostile contact with the arresting officer, she was struck, and later also apprehended.

The officer did a great job in a potentially dangerous situation.
Some of the youth today have a gangster mentality.
Did you hear her say F the police while she struggled to get away? This would have been unthinkable when I was a high school student.

I don't really understand the post citing the court cases. It wasn't an unlawful arrest....

Anonymous said...

just to clarify...it wasn't an arrest. he asked to speak with them (not arrest them, but most likely to cite them) because they were jaywalking and they started freaking out and pushing the officer (look at the beginning of the video), which is when things escalated. but he was not trying to arrest them initially. the cases pertaining to unlawful arrests are irrelevant. BUT after you start assaulting an officer and being uncooperative, I am pretty sure an arrest would be the appropriate measure.

WOW THE COMMENTS POSTED ON THIS SITE ARE DISGUSTING!! HOW DARE ANYONE SAY THAT A TEEN NEEDED TO BE PUNCHED IN THE FACE BY AN OFFICER OF THE LAW!! IF HE FELT THAT THE SITUATION WAS GETTING OUT OF HAND HE SHOULD HAVE CALLED FOR BACK UP!! I UNDERSTAND THAT THE TEENS WERE BEING DISRESPECTFUL BUT I MEAN COME ON JAY WALKING YOU WERE GOING TO CITE THEM AND LET THEM BE. I KNOW FOR A FACT THEY TEACH YOU WAY TO CONTROL A SUSPECT( FOR LACK OF A BETTER TERM) IN POLICE 101!!!! THIS OFFICER SHOULD HAVE A LAW SUIT SLAPPED ON HIM AND FIRED.

There must be alot of cops here for most of these posts to be justufying the hit that cop gave that girl it wasnt right period.... let alone she was a woman i dont care about her appearance or whether she was appeared to be assaulting him you dont hit someone like that its bad protocol....

I can't believe some of you agree with the tactics of this officer....Under no circumstances should he have punched her in the face....Now the 19 year okay he was working under the scope of an officer. However, the 19 that was totally repulsive and I can not believe someone would condone that behavior. If those two young ladies were such a threat he should have called for back up...What if it were your daughter, cousin, mother, grandmother...come on now. Other measures could have been used, that is why officers go threw extensive training to restrain individuals to gain control...Boy...boy...boy....what is the world comming to...this is a sad world.

Anonymous said...

Call for back up they were coming at him!! And for the record they were NOT LADIES!!! My daughter, cousin, mother or grandmother would never act like that..what is sad about out world is that their are animals running around acting like that, thinking it is ok to attack an officer..Sad world right!!

Anonymous said...

And I meant to the 17 year old who was detained 1st...and the one who mention arrest....lawful or unlawful....his tactics were unexceptable. Have you ever been caught off gaurd by a cop....Exactly! Or u wouldn't condon such a thing....Like I said let them do the samething to ur wife...mother daughter....and see if u would say the same exact words.....that's the reason you cops get away with so much crime as it is....Because peoples morals and Values are so off balance...I'm outta here....like the previous post said u guys are probably cops....come to California and do such a thing.....hint hint....I'm pretty sure you can look up who wrote this blog.....

Anonymous said...

I'm on the policemans side...these policemen have to put up with ridiculous stupid people like this everyday and it is understandable that they sometimes loose control of themselves when surrounded by annoying bitchy grabbing women who instead of co-operating with the enforcement officer like any decent person would do, have started a cat fight instead....what is this officer suppose to do when grabbed by the second woman who should not have interfered..he is trying to do his job and someone starts grabbing him and trying to interfere....on the otherhand it was an overeation to punch her....yes he should have used restraint..pepper spray...tazer..called for backup ..but he is a human being like us and no one is perfect..the woman was annoying, insulting and interfering everything except listening and obeying the officer..lets give these guys a break their job is tough and thankless..this woman deverse an apoligy for the officers behavior and compensation for any harm done her but at the same time she caused the situation not the officer who over-reacted..a decent repectful person would have just done what the officer instruted them to do and nothing would have happened ..officers dont just punch people for nothing.

Watch the video again..now this time count how may times the cop gets charged at and hit.

I agree with the last post but officers are held to a higher standard and like myself I am a nurse...patients become combative on a daily however, as a nurse I am held at a higher and have to shut up and deal with the situation accordingly. Not get pissed and not give a patient his medical orders just because He or she has ruined my day....if that were the case....I would have lost my license long ago....but like I said then u have those who want to then call African Americans animals and say NO ONE they know would act like that....I was falsely arrested one time and held composer but your first reaction is omg....wtf....God Bless Everyone I just hope this doesn't continue....on both parts...on the citizens and the officers behath....also the next person take a look as well they did not attack him they were verbally abusive and actted their age....17 and 19 years old!

Remember that incident when two women overpowered a police officer during a traffic stop? Well, that cop is now 6 feet under. One of the women was able to grab his gun and shot him. I'm not a fan of the police, but these two girls were out of control. This could have easily ended up badly for that cop. In my opinion, he should have punched both of them in the face, and slammed both of their unruly @$$e$ to the ground, handcuffed them both, throw them in the back of his car, and take them both to jail. I don't condone hitting a woman, but after watching that video, I even felt like punching those two girls for being so stupid.

Anonymous said...

These girls are clearly not women they are upset they are being penalized for something i'm sure plenty of people where doing. And when he took such an aggresive stance for such a minor infraction that was the first mistake.

I've never EVER seen someone get a ticket for jaywalking and that he decided to punch someone in the face before calling for back up shows his lack of judgment and the he does not deserve that badge he carries.

Who where they endangering with all that wild and crazy jaywalking there was absolutely no need for such excessive force the girls didn't strike him and he needs to be seriously reprimanded or Chicago is gonna see a race riot and that’s just the truth whether people think it's right or not or if they like it or not.

Anonymous said...

u always do what the police say u see none of men didn't do a thing because they knew they would have gotten shot dead. the police always get off she should have kept her mouth close and things wouldn't have gone the way it did

It is very easy for all of you to pass judgement on this police officer's decision. Unless you were in his position, you don't know what you would do. What if the second girl or one of the guys thought they may have an opportunity to go for his gun. You just never know.

Anonymous said...

What is the difference between this cop and the Taliban? (In attitude and treatment of women).
This man deserves to be in an asylum for the dangerously deranged mental patients, not in the police force of such as civilized country as the US.

Anonymous said...

I wonder if any action was taken [pursuant to the arrest of the young lady] against the unruly and out of control cop.

Anonymous said...

i think that this police officer should have his badge taken away, because his action were completely wrong. these were not only teenagers he was man handling but they were girls. no girl should ever be pushed about like he did and certainly no girl should be punch by a grown man. its truely an outrage, how are supposed to feel safe in this world if the police are the ones hurting us.

i think those that agree with the police officers action are wrong. what if was your child that got punched by the police, im sure you wouldnt stand for it. you would try and seek justice for your child, because you know that police was wrong. but since those girl are nobody to you, you feel his action were correct. but they werent, i just think there should be some form of consequences for his actions so that we see that the justice department is doing their job.

Anonymous said...

I just want to said good job to the cop! It is a jaywalking ticket pay it and move on. Instead those dump girls assaulted a cop and now, they just look stupid to the whole world.

Anonymous said...

The police officer was justified in regaining control and defending himself. Just because she is young, a girl or black, many will say the officer was wrong and that is the response of someone who refused to take responsibility for their actions. Its "always someone else’s fault" has become their lifelong excuse.

The lack of respect for authority in any form has been a growing problem for years. It doesn’t seem to matter if it is a police officer, a teacher, store owner or who ever, some people think they can do and say whatever they want and get away with it because they have been given a pass so often before because of their sex, race or social class.

The attitude of these young girls is a product of their upbringing and socially accepted behavior and unfortunately, it have been tolerated for too long. And THAT is the real problem.

Anonymous said...

The girl grabbing the cops arm had to be stopped ASAP. She could have gone for his gun next. The punch was the quickest way to do that. I would hate to think what would have happened to me if I would have grabbed at a cop the way that she did.

I am a african american young male, it is sad that our young men and woman show no respect for the law..if she felt the jaywalking ticket was no justified you do not fight with an officer you will have your day in court to deal with it..fighting with a cop will never end in your favor..it will always go bad weather you are right or wrong..so to all the people out there that is passing judgement..it is better to respect the law when you face it than to confront it in that manor..i would hope we raise our young people to be more respect full when confronted with a situation we do not like and to respect ourself and others even cops...

Never is it o.k. to put your hands on a police officer. Never. The girl deserved it. Go to court and plead your case. Can you imagine if we all wrestled our cops just for a traffic ticket? These two girls need to learn some manners, because there parents are obviously not doing a good job.

What’s up with the name calling and racial slant? Should he have reacted any other way if the subject was white, Hispanic, Korean or……? (fill in the blank)

The correct response should be: NO.

Would you give someone who attacked you like that a pass just because they were the same color as you?

The correct response should be: NO.

I have seen people of all colors and backgrounds do things like this and the response should be the same.

The correct response should be: Fast and Decisive.

The police officer was fully justified in hitting her... she initiated the violence by physically interfering with the officer. A single punch was about the least thing the officer can do in this situation. It isn't like he was continuing to hit her while she did nothing.

These young women are hoodlums - a law abiding decent person would fight this arrest in court. It doesn't matter if the officer was even wrong about the jaywalking charge. Resisting arrest is only justifiable if you believe your life is in danger and there was no evidence of that. In either case, pushing, shoving and hitting a police officer means you should expect violence in return.

Anonymous said...

Maybe there wasn't enough done to difuse the situation before it escalated, but it certainly looks like there was little or no respect for authority. Fastest way to escalate something with an officer is to ignore or disrespect. He obviously was outnumbered & as fast as it escalated needed to protect himself and his weapon lest it escalated even farther. In hindsight, pepper spray could have gone a long way...

Anonymous said...

I'm not a police officer, I'm in fact an African American citizen of Seattle. These girls were asked by the officer to stand by the vehicle to get cited for a jaywalking offense. They became both verbally and physical combative, causing the officer to use restraint. The one in pink should never have got involved and in doing so shoved the cop (0:28), assault. When the girl in black evaded he had reason to use restraint, and that's all he is doing. She keeps struggling. They had no right to put their hands on him at all. He is doing his best to control the situation. Well done officer.

Anonymous said...

A punch was the LEAST this cop could do to get these girls off of him. He could have used his baton or pepper spray but knew he could handle it physically. Any time a citizen assaults an officer at ALL (touching, hitting, pushing, shoving) they should expect a consequence. They got what was coming to 'em! Why the HELL would you put your hands on a cop? #Fail

It is sad when people in this society think it is ok to ever hit a female. That situation should have been approached in a more professional manner. I don't care how lady like you think your mothers, grandmothers, aunts are it could happen to them as well. I bet noone would like for their love ones to treated in such a cruel manner. Police officers go through training and are suppose to be trained to happen difficult situations. It is disgusting, the police acted in a disgusting manner and I would definitely feel unsafe with him roaming around the streets so call suppose to be protecting the community. The people who believe the girl should have been hit are just ignorant people who engulfed themselves in negativity. Those girls are not animals for walking around; the person who made the statement is an animal for thinking they should have been hit----you are a monster.

Anonymous said...

Ignorant people out there whose ignorance spreads exponentially. People are entirely ignorant of the law and their rights under the law. They are use situations such as this to produce and sustain a false environment by assualting the justice system. Citizens continually are allowed to extort money and other concessions from law enforcement by inciting a situation such as this-making sure there are an army of animals around to film it for an increasingly ignorant posterity. Their parents, grandparents and teachers must be very proud of what they raised. I am a woman and I would have taken her down, drew my weapon an placed it to her head. I then would cuff her and leave her face down in the dirt where she belongs and then do the same to her ignorant punk friends.

This girl didn't get enough of what she deserved. Her foul, loud mouthed tirade was used to draw attention as she very deliberately incited the situation. I bet the entire episode was planned. Stand-by for the multi-million dollar lawsuit payout to her and her ignorant family of loud mouthed louts. It's suprising the number of people that do not realize or have any understanding or empathy for the officer who was under atack from these vicious brutes. Also would like to see the episode from the very beginning...I bet most of us would be cheering the officer on after witnissing the entire story. Context people, it's all about editing and context. You see what they want you to see. Led around like a lamb by it's nose. I'm sure you have all seen the videos of vicious, aggressive women and young girls lately (particulary in Seattle) beating on other girls till the point of almost inflicting permannent brain damage. What do you think this cop has to deal with daily? About 100-fold of this type activity. Girls are no longer ladies. They are the sick product of objectfication and abuse and abandonment by their family; to be raised by a pack of mutant pack dogs with the resultant pack mentality. And this is the product. I don't blame the cop at all, and none of you should either. Trade places for a week...then let me know what you think.

this whole situation to me is racism, if the girl were white the situation would have happened differently. but since they were black its ok for them to be hit. the officer is not innocent, he purposely hit a MINOR in the face but its ok. NO its bull he was just as wrong as them. but he is more at fault because he abused his authority. he could have simply called for back up and the situation would have been defused. it was morally wrong and im sure he knew that. there is no justice in this world anymore. he is not an innocent man, he is just as much a criminal as everyone is tryin to make those girls out to be. he was not justified, and if you think he was your seriously mistaken.

Anonymous at June 16, 2010 12:39 PM ---- by what logic do you arrive at this conclusion? You just made my point...think before you jump to conclusions about everything being an incident of racism. It was an episode of trashy, disrespectful, out of control behavior by a stupid teen age girl who was raised by wolves, apparently. Why does it have to be categorized as racism? Where in here did RACE ever come up? The only thing I heard was her saying F COPS! and F YOU and get YOUR FING HANDS OFF ME! You need to be evaluated for delusions of paranoia. Get in the real world. Those of us that act like fools in a moment of weakness and poor judgement can take responsibilty for our actions as INDIVIDUALS and "man up" without screaming RACISM; blaming every one but ourselves for our idiocy!

Anonymous at June 16, 2010 12:39 PM ---- "this whole situation to me is racism, if the girl were white the situation would have happened differently. but since they were black its ok for them to be hit. " ----- conversly I suppose you think because they are black it's ok to act like a complete junk yard dog? If anyone acted this way the cop would have, AND SHOULD have done what he needed to do to subdue her. She acted like a screaming, out of control, punk. She thought she would get a pass because of her sex and age. Her little posse of girl thug/hoodlums are just as bad. I still think it was a set up for the cop and a lawsuit. As I said, ignorance perpetuates. Eventually the behavior becomes accepted after enough people extort concessions from law enforcement by their outrageous behavior which then becomes the norm. Utter ignorance is no excuse. People cannot just blow off the law whenever they think they are above it, for whatever reason. Screaming racism is just another way of saying "I'm above the law and you can't touch me. I can do whatever I want because if I scream loud enough and act badly enough I can get away with it by screaming racism." These girls acted like thugs and got handled appropriately. Doesn't matter what their ethnicity.

As I read these posts I wonder what are some of you thinking. If a celebrity hits his wife or girl friend then everybody wants him to do jail time for domestic abuse, regardless of the fact that she may have been hitting him first. Why should a police officer have the right to hit a 17 year old girl, a minor, in the face? His badge and gun does not make him above the law. If he can not control a situation any better than this then he need to be re-trained in his duties. Regardless of whether the girl was black or white she is still a girl that is 17 years old. If this would happen to my daughter I would not sit by passively and accept the cover up that the police department is displaying.

Anonymous said...

I am a black woman living in Los Angeles and believe that the officer should have punched and sprayed both of these girls. What a display of no respect for authority. Everyone was to close up on him and everyone should have been laying on the ground. LAPD and LA Sheriffs don't play that crap and will kick some ass. It doesn't matter is you are white or black.

I would have hooked them up good for resisting arrest and obstruction of justice fist, foot, club and maze. I bet they don't behave like this ever again. Did you see how well behave and submissive the other one became after a good knock to her senses. Hummmm! He knocked some sense into her head. LOL!

All the post about, had the girls been white this wouldn't have happened have it skewed. The girls were PLAYING the victim here. They knew exactly what they were doing. Try this on for size... had the officer been black, this wouldn't even be on this site, because the girls wouldn't have been playing the disrespect the white man.

And resisting illegal arrest is decided in court, not by the defendent on the street at the time of the action. If a officer decides to cite me for any reason, I have no right to dispute it at the time. My time to say anything is in a court of law.

As soon as the office cited the girls for jaywalking it was their legal obligation to stop and accept the citation. As soon as they ignored the instructions of a police officer, they broke the law. As soon as they resisted restraint when they didn't listen to the verbal commands of the officer, they broke the law. As soon as the one woman laid a hand on the officer for any reason, she broke the law.

As much as the law was on his side, the police officer lost sight of the overall situation. He was the only one in serious danger. That crowd was pretty close to jumping him and he should have backed off, gotten in his car, called for backup and followed the girls in the car.

We are commenting on a video. We are not there at the incident. We have to realize a black people the does and don'ts and this was a don't on their part. Let the officer do all the wrong doings and you will have a better case. Lesson 101 don't ever touch a police officer is no kind of way....all the people that standing around should have summon the police on the matter and told the girl to stop resisting arrest..now they both will go down for assault and arrest...the officer will be justified...now on the officer sucker puching a young girl...he needs training 101...he skips a few steps and that's why it turn out this way....

Come on people, get real, that was not a sucker punch. She hit him first and put herself in a position to be hit. I realize a police officer has to show restraint, but this is just ridiculous. Some young people need to learn respect and that there are consequences for their actions. Both girls were lucky they weren't tazed or worse. I have to admit I would have enjoyed seeing one of them getting tazed.

It is well known by any Seattle area resident that you do not jaywalk. If you do you are subject to a citation. The officer was doing his job. the girl should have been tased... the fact that the cop showed the restraint to continue to simply try to restrain the subject was admirable. also, the girl who got punched in the face should also go for assault on an officer. he did what he had to do to end a potentially very dangerous situation in the safest and most concise way possible. to all you people attacking the officer for what he did, you are idiots. how would you have liked him to handle the situation? he handled himself in a very professional manner and i hope that he is commended by his department for a job well done

My son in law is a police officer. I would hate to get a phone call saying he was killed by a 17 year old girl, who grabbed his gun while resisting arrest. Race, age, sex, are not the relevant issue in this case. Bottom line, the girls ignored the officer, were verbally abusive, got in the officers face, pushed, shoved and grabbed at him. Maybe he could have done things differently, but more importantly the girls should have. He did what he was forced to do given the situation. I am pleased he wasn't hurt. I hope the girls learn a valuable lesson...while in jail, and that the state does not reward their bad behavior. Lori Nashville TN

I am and African-American teacher in the educational system, and the attitudes, behaviors and disposition displayed by those girls, is what I experience in the classroom on a daily basis and sadly amongst the African Americans students - girl in particularly. No respect for authority, loud mouth, talking back and abusive language. The jury is still out on the reaction of the policeman; however, our children have got to know when to stand down. I understand our young people are wanting to be independent and free-spirited; however, there comes a time when young people are going to have to learn the hard way when it comes to disrespecting authority, even when authority is in the wrong. Humble cooperation in the face of authority diffuses even the appearance of an over-reaction every time. It doesn't matter if you are black white or green, humble....cooperation is the key. And for the life of me.....shut up and stop talking so much!

Am I missing something here??? How are people defending the girls actions??? I don't get it. They attacked a police officer, and he did what was necessary at the time. It's not a black and white issue. It's not man vs woman issue. These women confronted the cop in an agressive manner, period. These cops put their lives on line every day. Regardless of if they were teenage girls, so showed a total lack of respect for his badge. If they were bold enough to approach the cop in that way, they could have just as easily reached for his gun as well. Being that he was the only cop on the scene, and the incident escalated pretty quickly, the cop did what was good for the time. Me personally, I would've either mased or tasered the teens. Once they attacked the cop, it becomes a criminal offense, and the cop has within every right of his job to protect himself where appropiate.

Playing this scenario out but replacing the white cop with black and black girls with white, I'm pretty confident that the cop would be facing some serious charges and found guilty.
How do we come to a fair conclusion without involving the color of one's skin?
(I am white and in no way racist, if I dislike someone it is because of who they are)

PS i dislike all three involved.

Now if you listen to the whole video begaining to end you can hear the guy filming it saying how much do you think the TV station will give use for this with the cop ponching her $100 maybe $1000 $'s. I think this was a set up. I think he should of let the other girl go and then turned all his attetion to the second girl and KICKED her A$$. I also think every one of the croud they can ID should be arrested for condoning an assault of a police officer.

Basically there were some AFRICAN AMERICAN people crossing the street and some racist cop decided that it was so important to pull a bench of teens over for walking. He looks like he probably had what we call "short man syndrome"! Obviously he doesn't deserve to be a police office because he couldn't even handle a couple of FEMALES in the proper manner. We should add this to the Rodney King beating case. When will people learn?!?!?

Anonymous said...

This was total disrespect to the law. If the article did not say it I would not know she was only 17 so how did the officer know. If this where a white boy this would of never been an issue.
The media and others for riding this issue is the real trouble.

I was hit by a cop and I did not get a video on TV, internet or no public group defending me. No one cared. Everyone told me thats what you get for your disrespect. But then again I am white.

Notice the white girl standing there. She new better. But if it where her instead of the black girl. We would not be watching this. It would be a non issue.

i'm black and i hate to say it but those girls where out of line and needed to be hit. jaywalking in seattle is a big deal and if any of you did any back work you would know that 1 girl already has a record for assaulting a cop and neither girl would show their ID when asked which gives him suspicion and reason to run them in. you can't justify these chicks fighting with the cops period, if he is wrong fight it in court. he was in a hostile crowd with to unruly suspects and no time to really call for backup if you see the whole tape and know the situation. stop throwing out the race card people, be real, this chick is lucky she didn't get slammed to the ground, or tazed, she got of lucky if you ask me.

"Wrong, he should be arrested for assault. If I did that I would be charged with a felony. if he cant handle a simple jay walking stop then he shouldn't be a cop. the fact that these girls might not be model citizens has no relevance to this issue. This Cop lost control and committed a felony assault on a woman."

AMEN.

Listen, my whole family including my Father are police officers. I've lived with the fear of him not coming home. I know what a great service honest cops do - but this guy SHOULD NOT be a cop. He was out of line. You can see him grabbing her at the beginning of the video. There's no reason to even start touching someone on a jaywalking stop.

Anonymous said...

This so called "girl" has a prior assault on an officer.

It went from a simple jaywalking offense to an assault the moment this jerk decided she wasn't going to listen to anyone including this cop.

He was totally justified in punching her face. She's lucky that's all that happened to her. She could have been shot!

Anonymous said...

This city is an embarrassment. The people posting here, defending these girls only show your utter ignorance. She did not get punched for jaywalking. She got punched for attacking a police officer, interfering with law enforcement, resisting arrest and inciting an attack on a police officer. You say "JAYWALKING - SERIOUSLY??!!!!" and intimate that she got punched for jaywalking...wake up! If it is that insignificant of an action then why could they not just comply with his request to come to the patrol car (as the gentleman who was involved in the jaywalking incident from moments before did)? No-the 19yr old (old enough to know better) blew him off and kept walking away from him. When he tried to escort her to the patrol car she resisted, he then told her to put her palms on the patrol car and she began to fight him, cursing him and basically behaving like a crazy, spoiled, insolent abusive, ranting brat...then the other girl pushed the cop (this girl has previous assault and car theft charges on record). Too bad the cop didn't know her record because he would have been forewarned that she was aggressive and had a criminal bent; he could have been on guard and isolated her while he dealt with the jaywalking lecture. Really-what was he supposed to do? He was in the midst of addressing jaywalking with a previous miscreant(who was wisely complying); when he sees this group doing the same thing RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM WITH HIS PATROL CAR IN PLAIN SIGHT 20 FEET FROM A PEDESTRIAN OVERPASS! Their intent was to flaunt the law and the policeman. Those of you defending these girls just show your glaring ignorance, disrespect, lack of civility and immaturity. You also display an inability to employ logical reasoning skills in analyzing what happended here. Most of you sound like anarchists and make assumptions about the cop and his need for power and his "short man complex" and so on; just highlighting your refusal to reasonably critique the incident. You sound like a bunch of undisciplined children that have no respect for humanity and believe you can act in any way you choose in society. You seem to think you are entitled to flout society and the rule of law; lacking the manners, impulse control and citizenship necessary to thrive and succeed within society. It seems to me a no-brainer that with those attitudes and lack of thought that this situation probably was bound to happen...and it has nothing to do with the policeman. Why don't all you talking about how messed up the police are go out and do his job? No? Too scared? Too much bother? Hmmmm...maybe you should learn more about how to help your city and educate your self and your citizens in making your city better...then the cops won't have to deal with ignorant brutes like these girls and the fools that defend them.

The fact that these girls were black female teens is irrelevant. What is relevant is they were being cited for committing an ILLEGAL act no matter how minor. What is relevant is instead of accepting the citation like most reasonable, rational people they chose to physically protest the citation. What is relevant is the girl in pink not only put her hands on the officer she pushed him away with some force. What is relevant is at one point while the officer was attempting to restrain one of the out of control girls the other was jumping on his back. I am not a police officer but I cannot imagine how you call for backup while you are suddenly greatly outnumbered and in the process of trying keep from getting your ass kicked. Police officers are paid to uphold the law no matter how minor the law is. Yes jaywalking is a minor offense, but this didn't happen because they were jaywalking it happened because the girls chose to physically resist the Police officers initial actions. If you jaywalk you stand a chance at getting cited plain and simple. Take your argument up in court. We also can't just decide which laws we need to follow and which ones we can just blow off. Personally if it were my daughter, I would be absolutely embarrassed at her actions and insist she apologize for putting the officers life at risk. I would also suggest she stay locked up for a few days as a punch in the face would have been the least of her worries once she got home. The only training the officer needs is how to deal with the emotional effects of being drug through the mud by so called black community leaders who choose to accuse the officer for overreacting while getting his ass kicked rather than denouncing people of their own race for acting stupidly. And for those who claim this would be different if the girls were white. I don't think so. If they were white and acting the same way they probably would have gotten punched as well. I believe these girls will be frequent fliers of our penal system.

Shame on you North-Americans! You should read Brazilian Children and adolescents by-law to learn how to treat young people. If any professional does such a thing in Brazil he/she loses his/her job forever. If the police officer were an authority he should have used the intelligence to solve that situation, not violence. It belongs to the animals.
You did this to a north-american and do that to many countries in the world too. Shame on all of you who agree with the police officer attitude.

should be made to attend counseling for 30 sessions. That would be an appropriate sentence for the total lack of respect of others on both parties.

The officer executed a technique for which Seattle police officers are trained to use as "appropriate force"; and it was approriate in this situation. Attitudes are different in different countries. Here, in the US, we take pride in our law enforcement personnel. As a people we try to control ourselves and act responsibly and with repect and civility toward each other. We try to raise our children with these values. Those that act outside the law are subject to meeing the law on it's terms, not the other way around. This is as it should be. We have a very large country with 50 states and many municipalities; with their own unique challenges. US law enforcement is probaly the best in the world. Our people are professional, intelligent, well trained and courteous (by and large); but some situations challenge law enforcement personnel and not the least of which is those that purposefully do so. This girl met with appropriate force necessary to stop her interference. Thankfully someone with her had the common sense to pull her off the policeman. Both girls engaged him physically, simultaneously at one point. He was under attack, a crowd was growing (I counted at least 20/1 at one point), and the girls were not complying with direction by authority. I pray the court does not drop the ball on this one.

What about the people watching. I feel they should have stepped in and assisted the cops and or comforted the girls instead of standing and doing nothing. They should feel responsible for allowing her to get hit. I feel like they were almost enouraging that behavior. What ever happended to helping people and what did the cop say that those girls just totally made a fool of themselves. If I was they mama, I would say I wouldn't worry about the cop beating them wait till they get home and see what i'm gonna do to them. My family would slap me for being so disrespectful and acting out like that.

Aparecida, good to know that in Brazil your children can break the law, resist arrest and assault police officers and expect nothing to happen to them, otherwise the cop will lose their job. Make sure everyone watches out for the children running wild in Brazil!!

These "girls" are not children. They were old enough to walk the streets w/o supervision, break the law repeatedly and even have prior assault records. They are lucky he showed restraint! He needed to slow the escalating situation for everyones safety. He was outnumbered and under attack.

To all you people who are upset that he hit a girl, seriously grow up. As a girl, I don't throw any punches, pushes or other physical attacks w/o expecting it back. Just because you are female, it doesn't give you the right to hit anyone, including a male, and get away with it. You want to be treated like a lady, then act like one!

I fully support the officer and pray these hoodlums don't get away with a dime. They were fully and clearly in the wrong! How many laws do they get to brake before they see the consequences?

Two wrongs don't make a right and at one time I know everybody over 21 reading this was 17 too, so I get the whole teenage thing. But being 17 and being stupid don't particularly go hand in hand.

As a 49 year-old black woman from the southside of Chicago, I was taught as a teenager just do what they ask you to do and hopefully, you won't get shot. But if you scrap with them--you probably will get shot--and killed. People have been killed by the "po po" in Chicago for a lot less than jaywalking.

I think about the guy in NYC who was shot at his bachelor party the night before his wedding because of mistaken identity. That was brutality. The Somalian guy who was shot, again in NYC not doing a thing. The 92 year-old woman who got killed because the police went to the wrong house..but this? Brutality? Please.

I have absolutely no remorse for these females. There are some that would argue that the camera being on them had nothing to do with their behavior, but I disagree--it's the YouTube world we live in and they are a part of that YouTube generation. Plus they had a nice little audience going. And in case anyone didn't notice, the guy in the blue shirt tried to hold the fool that got popped from getting involved, but she yanked away from him.

I suppose it has become fashionable for people to act a complete fool, cuss out the "po po" and if you disagree with the why, try to resist arrest when they tell you to turn around and put your hands behind your back.

Agreed. The policeman's response was wholly inappropriate and unnecessary, but the way these two fools were behaving was EQUALLY inappropriate. If they'd complied with what the man asked them to do, kept that piehole shut and then one of them got popped...then I would totally be on their side.

People get a grip--you really think you're going to behave like these two fools and the sole policeman on the scene is going to just radio for backup? (Which, I totally agree, is what he should've done when those two fools wouldn't shut the hell up. But I'm sure testosterone on his part was not about to let that happen). You really think these two fools would have straightened up if 5 squad cars full of female officers showed up? I don't.

All I can say is this, rather we like it or not--rather we agree with it or not--in our sociey, the po po represents law enforcement. If anyone (17 or 42) really thinks they can talk to the police any kind of way (like cussing them out), act any kind of way (like hitting them because you're "taking up" for your friend), and not do what they ask you to do because you don't feel like it or because you feel why they're telling you do it is something you don't agree with, the police is just going to "back down" and say "oh, okay"...on what planet and in what decade did anything like that happen? There's a reason why if you kill you're neighbor you'll get 25 years to life, but kill a cop and the state will electrocute your behind.

And for the person who's a nurse...maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think it's against the law to strike a nurse, teacher, etc., but it is against the law to a, interfere with police business, b, resist arrest and c, hit a policeman--those two knuckleheads did all three.

For those who seem to be blind enough to back the girls I feel sorry for the world your children will grow up in. If you truly feel that way I would guess many of you probably have criminal records. For those that don't you probably just haven't been caught yet. For those that feel that way and will never get in trouble you probably just haven't grown up yet. It is amazing how many people were walking around with cell phones taking video rather than giving the officer some assistance. I suspect many chose not to get involved because they didn't want to get pummeled by the crowd. Some chose not to get involved because they had the sense to know you don't treat a cop that way. At least one of these girls has had a couple run ins with the law. I bet if you looked at her school records, they would reflect how she acted on the street. This goes straight to parenting, or lack thereof. The comments from the black leaders (i use that term loosely)are a direct cause of racism. I can see backing your race when appropriate but at some point you need to just tell people such as these girls they are way out of line rather than make excuses for them. What else could the officer had done? Tazer, not practical in close range situations. Baton, probably beyond what would have been reasonable. Gun, not appropriate in this situation. Physical restraint, well gee isn't that what it came to. This was his only viable option. He de-escalated the girls attitudes by striking her once and stopping. Al Sharpton complained he wound up before he hit her. Well Al this was not a love fest. If an officer wants to get their point across when nothing else works they probably better get a good lick in. If they don't it may be their last. The ultimate goal of any officer is to go home to their spouse and children at the end of the day. Despite the dumb asses of society, IE these girls, most officers do go home each and every day. I recall the black community organized a march on I-5 through downtown Seattle at 5 pm in protest of an officers justified shooting of a black man. About one week later retired Navy Seal and Deputy Richard Hertzog was killed when he encountered a nude black male in the street in the Renton Newcastle area. The man charged Hertzog who was knocked over causing his gun to fall from his holster. Hertzog got up and began to run towards his vehicle for cover. Before he got there the subject picked up Hertzogs weapon and shot him in the back eventually unloading the entire weapon in to Hertzog at close range. No white power freeway protests, no white people denouncing blacks, and most disturbing no black community leaders speaking up in sorrow for Hertzogs family and no black leaders denouncing the subject for his actions. Until the black community leaders stand up and hold their own people accountable for their actions it will never change. I would also add that the beginning of this year was marred by 5 Pacific Northwest police officers being killed in cold blooded ambushes by members of the black community. Again no white protests, no no white leaders denouncing blacks, Just silent black leaders, five very sad unnecessary funerals and five families suddenly with out a loved one.

I was stopped by a Seattle police officer for jaywalking a year ago. I admit it. I was guilty. I was stupid. BUT I didn't flip out and start acting like a moron. The officer gave me a verbal warning "Next time, use the crosswalk." I said "Yes sir" and he went on his way and I went mine. When you get stopped by the police, don't act stupid. Our police officers have extremely dangerous jobs, and they deserve our respect. If an officer says not to do something, how hard is it to comply? Those nasty attitude brats wanted to cause trouble, and they got it full force. If that officer really wanted to hurt brat #1 whom he punched, that little miss nasty would have been on the ground and out cold.

Make sure everyone watches out for the children running wild in Brazil!!

In Brazil or in any other country, nobody may break the law, but some people do as in US. In that case, here, the authorities have to give a good example of behaving, of reprimanding without humiliation or violence (When they do is in extreme situations, dealing with dangerous people)Of course, there are police officers who break the law too, but in both cases, both transgressors are punished. "Many children are running wild" in Brazil not because they are simply wild, but because they are treated like that since they are born, they are surrounded by unequal rights. Only who suffers that can see and feel the offense that many "educated" people commit everyday.
Everywhere if a beautiful rich person breaks the law, the things are solved peacefully but the poors are always treated like animals, so they react like animals!

In that situation, you can see that the cop didn't talk to the girl, but grabbed her and almost broke her with his ju-jitsu techniques in order to force her to be quiet and enter in the car. The other girl, tried to separate them. She didn't assault the cop. She reacted like a mom separating their children fighting. What is common when we see someone in injustice and dangerous situation: we help a friend. I'm sure she didn't mean to attack the police officer, otherwise she had run away just after that not to be in prison as she was. Doctors, teachers, parents are authorities too. Do they punch people when they "trangress the laws" or are offended too? Adults have to educate and education has no relation to violence.
It seems that if Jesus Christ appeared in Seattle he would be killed again. According to the Jews, he broke his law too.

Wow. All of you people who think those stupid girls didn't deserve to get hit have got to be the biggest bunch of idiots I've ever had the misfortune of hearing from. If I was that cop I would have done more than just throw a sorry excuse for a punch at her face. I would have body slammed her and then gone after the other girl. What was he supposed to do? Let them both verbally abuse him and walk away? That would be a great example for the rest of the people that break the law huh? As far as I'm concerned if your too stupid to know that you can't put your hands on an officer of the law then you deserve what you get. I don't care if it was for spitting on the sidewalk. When a cop stops you, you don't resist.

I am a 42 year old black woman. I hate the fact that the officer had to hit these girls in order to gain control. Bottom line, they were disrespectful. I am a teacher and everyday I see students growing up with a total lack of respect for those in authority. They turned a simple situation into a total scene by acting like total crazies. The guy taping the video should have stopped and helped the officer by talking to his "Sistas". He could have pulled Miss Pink out of the way. He is a pure hypocrit. I know there are bad cops out there, but you can plainly see that he tried everything he could to gain control. When Miss Pink pushed him I believe he acted instinctively. He did not continue to hit her. THAT would have been brutality. Yes they were young ladies but they acted like street thugs with no home training! They better be glad thats all he did.

And those who are saying it was racially motivated...SHUT UP! NOT THIS TIME. Al Sharpton find another case to exploit!

Wow! I can't believe the world we live in! You put on a badge and it's OK to punch a woman in the face because he's an Officer? It's WRONG, UNLAWFUL & AN ABUSE OF POWER!

No question, the young women were OUT OF CONTROL! All the more reason to call for assistance. That said, as an AA Woman, I feel contempt for the young women that didn't comply with the Officers initial inquest and eventual attempt at an arrest. Whatever he wanted to give to them, or ask of them, at the end of the day, our taxes pay for Police Officers service. And NEVER, EVER should ANYONE use PROFANITY or TOUCH an Officer FOR ANY REASON!

That said, a fist is a fist, and if Police Officers, Men & Women think that they can punch women or teenage girls in the face because it's quicker to gain control of the situation, you're out of your minds! Too many options were available to this Officer, and he exercised POOR JUDGEMENT. Like the beligerent women, he too, should be held accountable for his actions or reactions.

Equally important, Officers are not GOD, SATAN or HEROS! You willfully signed up for all of the horrors that comes with your job. Enough already with the complaints of how difficult the job is.

It's even more problematic in Iraq for our young men and women serving our country but our young troops are held accountable by way of Court Marshall & even prison when and if they make JUSTIFIABLE mistakes.

So Police Officers should be held accountable when & if, they make emotionally questionable mistakes as well. More disturbing, does this Officer punch & slap on his wife or girlfriend the way he hit the woman in the video? Among other things, a psyche exam should be mandatory. In any event, all of them should be held accountable for their behavior. As for this "us against them" mentality that a lot of Police Officers have, they really should modify their thinking, becasue most people of color repect and appreciate what our Law Enforcement Officials are hired to do. And most of us do not agree with or condon the disgusting behavior displayed by these young women in video!

And we also believe that Officers are not God but Angels, some sent by God and others by Satan himself. Whatever the case may be, EVERY CITIZEN MUST RESPECT OUR LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS NO MATTER WHAT! The younger generation is truly lost, and I'm not even 40 years of age, but it saddens me to realize this!

The girl would not have been hit if she had obeyed the police officer, she puched him and as she laid her hands on him first, I think he did the right thing. We expect the police to protect us if we need them they should alos be able to protect themselves.

"A Psyche exam should be mandatory?" I love how this guy automatically turns into a wife beater to people who haven't seen the entire vid.

This cop was outnumbered 4 to 1, not including the hostiles in the crowd. And flat out, UNTIL YOU YOURSELF HAVE BEEN OUTNUMBERED LIKE THAT DON'T YOU DARE PRESUME TO KNOW HOW YOU'D REACT!!!

You latte cappuccino drinking wusses that have never been in a simple fist fight, let alone outnumbered should have no right to comment on something you know nothing about.

Quite frankly, in that situation, it was a testament to that cops training and self control that he restrained himself to one punch.

I've been involved in a gang assault like that, and that's what it was, assault. By the time pushing and shoving get involved there usually comes a strong flight or fight response. And the fact that the cop was able to keep his base instinct in, I.E. not fleeing like a little girl, or kicking the crap out of all of them, was the biggest statement to his emotional fitness that I've ever seen.

Anonymous said...

I agree with the cop 100 percent. How could they think to assault a cop and get away with it, female or male. They disrespected this cop and he took action. THEY DESERVED WHAT CAME TO THEM. I dont like getting tickets either, but I would have never acted as they have. And call for back-up are you kidding me? He knows he can settle the situation himself and he did and I thin he did what he had to.

Most male police officers were bullies growing up and now they use their badges to bully legally.

For all of you racist idiots putting down black people. . . There were several other blacks looking on and recording this and they did not jump the cop. If black people are so disrespectful of officers, they would have jumped him while he was there all by himself playing BIG BAD BULLY to two teen girls.

Blacks historically have a bad relationship with cops. We don't trust them because they were often part of the angry mob (or stood aside and watched) that hung and beat black men for just looking at a white woman. There was no justice for the black man. And I don't care how many years ago you think that might have been and "we should just get over it", there are still white people that hate black people just because of their color. And now that we have a black president, racial tension has heightened.

FACT - Once a person commits an infraction, i.e. Jaywalking (Walking outside the crosswalk), they ARE under arrest and NOT free to leave, UNTIL the officer(s) releases them with 1) admonishment, at the officer(s) discretion, or 2) issues a Citation (Written notice to appear, which is not an admission of guilt, simply a signed document that you will appear, on the date and time indicated or if they refuse to sign the Notice to Appear, they are then placed under physical arrest and "required" to be brought before a magistrate ( judge ).

If you resist a lawful arrest, as she did, she is now a FELON, and can be charged with numerous other felonies, such as "placing a hand on a police officer, is assault, even if seems minor to some. Its the law.

The other person who's pushing the Police Officer away and attempting to pull the girl from him, is now also a FELON, by attempting to "lynch" the lawfully arrested person (felon) from the officer.

You can hear people telling them to "stop resisting".
If they did, the situation would have ended quickly.

In that situation, the officer, who's alone, is engaged in a lawful, physical arrest and subsequent confrontation with two people, can, 1) ask for citizens help, a law requirement, 2) call for back up if you can get to radio unless two people are on you, and 3) use "whatever means necessary to effect the arrest" just like a citizen. Thats the law.

He was forced to redirect his attention to the lyncher, while subjecting himself to more danger and did the right thing by using the most effective tool at that moment, his hand, versus a baton or pepper spray to get her away from him.

Many of us were punished as children for disobeying or disrespecting our parents, elders, authorities etc. They'd usually explain later that our "actions and choices" come with consequences. The public plays by different rules until they're handcuffed or in custody. It's a sad truth.

Politicians, in most cases, run their police administrations and will lean towards voters who scream and yell, therefore taking the politically correct choice, not the right choice. The media will feed and fuel the fire of resistance for ratings, and the unwilling, will only see what the media portrays.

Thank God for common since. Please pray for those who don't have it, yet.

Sad situation all around.

The officer was 100% within his right to defend himself. Had the ladies simply stood by the car as directed he would have written their citations and been on their way, but they were clearly not rasied with any respect for authority. Their race nor their gender should have anything to do with the situation.

Authority figures are no more perfect than we are, but had the ladies chosen not to resist they would have been well in their rights to challenge the citation, having chosen to resist a simple citation likely resulted in much more substantial charges...

The black girl(s) were out of line. They have since apologized to the officer.

That police officer showed more restraint than most "ordinary citizens" would. Think what you would do if you had someone like these girls coming up to you like this... call the police, get into a fight....
