The thousands who attended the gathering were opposing a new constitution that will be put to a referendum in August, according to The New York Times. The current constitution has been criticized for creating an "imperial-like presidency" and the proposed constitution trims those powers and enhances individual rights. Last night's incident is reminiscent of the politically-motivated violence of 2008, says the report.
